What Are the Benefits of a Breast Lift?
Pre-pregnancy Breasts
Bearing children and breastfeeding are wonderful experiences for many women, but they can leave their once perky and firm breasts a little lackluster. One of the primary benefits of breast lift surgery is that patients can experience their pre-pregnancy breasts: a lifted appearance with a shapely breast contour, along with firmer, more rounded breasts and front-facing, attractive nipples.
Youthful Breasts
As you age and your skin begins to lose its elastic quality, breasts sag and become “deflated” due to a loss of volume. Breast lift surgery can elevate your breasts to a more youthful contour and position, and when paired with breast augmentation, patients can restore a plump, rounded breast shape for a perky, bouncy result.
Smaller Areolas
Breast lift surgery can reduce overly large areolas (the area surrounding the nipples) to create an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Natural-Looking Results
Breast lift surgery alone does not increase volume; rather, it enhances the shape while maintaining a natural-looking appearance. Dr. Mabourakh is known for creating results that look beautiful and natural, revitalizing the appearance of your breasts.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Breast Lift?
The ideal candidate for breast lift surgery is a healthy, emotionally stable, and non-smoking woman who experiences any degree of breast ptosis. Candidates should also have realistic expectations about their results and be knowledgeable about what breast lift surgery can and cannot accomplish.
Ideal breast lift candidates:
- Want to improve the appearance of sagging breasts
- Desire a more youthful breast shape
- Have lost breast volume due to significant weight loss or pregnancy
- Have drooping breasts
- Have good skin elasticity
- Have reasonable expectations for results
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for a breast lift is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mabourakh, who will discuss your goals and help you determine if this procedure is right for you. Call Folsom Plastic Surgery at (916) 984-8585 or complete the contact form to get started.
What Are My Breast Lift Options?
Schedule a ConsultationAnchor Incision
The most commonly performed breast lift technique is the anchor incision (also known as the inverted-T incision or anchor lift). This technique is ideal for women who experience moderate to severe forms of breast ptosis (sagging).
This method uses three incisions. The first is around the areola, the second is a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, and the third is a horizontal incision along the breast crease. From here, the nipple is elevated, excess breast skin and tissue are excised, and the breast is reshaped.
Benelli (Donut) Incision
For women who experience only mild breast sagging, a Benelli, or “donut,” lift may suffice. This is a limited incision option used to lift the breasts and elevate the nipples. This technique uses a single incision around the areola to remove excess breast and areolar skin. The Benelli lift provides subtle results.
How Is a Breast Lift Performed?
Preparing for Your Breast Lift
Dr. Mabourakh will give you pre-surgery instructions to follow closely to minimize the risk of complications. These instructions may include:
- Getting certain labs done
- Quitting smoking and nicotine use
- Adjusting certain medications and stopping blood thinners
Breast Lift Procedure Steps
Breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia and takes about two hours. Each patient is different, but generally, Dr. Mabourakh will begin surgery by making the predetermined incision pattern (anchor or donut). Through these incisions, Dr. Mabourakh will tighten and lift the breast tissue higher on the chest, resize and reposition the nipples, and remove excess breast skin. Once he is pleased with the appearance, he will carefully close the incisions with neatly placed sutures.
Breast Lift Recovery & Aftercare
In the days following the breast lift procedure, you will be asked to wear a surgical bra over your gauze dressings. The bandages will be removed within a few days, but the surgical bra must be worn around the clock for three to four weeks to ensure proper healing. You may experience bruising, swelling, and loss of sensitivity in the nipples and breast skin. These effects are temporary and will diminish over the next six weeks.
Although you will likely feel well enough to get back on your feet after a day or two, you should expect to take at least a week off work and refrain from strenuous exercise for six weeks.
What Results Can I Expect From a Breast Lift?
As you heal, your breast lift results will only improve over time. You’ll notice an immediate change in the position of your breasts: They will be higher up on the chest, with outward-facing nipples. As swelling dissipates and scars fade, you will be able to enjoy your perky, lifted breasts for years to come.
Breast Lift Frequently Asked Questions
-
What do breast lift scars look like?
While Dr. Mabourakh makes every effort to leave scars as inconspicuous as possible, some scarring will remain. The location of your incision will determine the extent and position of your scars. They may seem extensive at first; however, they will gradually fade and become less noticeable. Additionally, they can be easily covered with clothing. After your procedure, you will still be able to wear low-cut tops and bathing suits with no visible scarring. Post-operative care will be discussed in detail to reduce scarring. Dr. Mabourakh also offers scar gel and laser treatments.
-
How long will the results of my breast lift last?
The results of a breast lift are generally long lasting, barring additional pregnancies or significant weight fluctuations. However, the results will not be permanent; breast lift surgery will not stop the aging process, and you can expect your breasts to experience some degree of change as you age.
-
What are the risks associated with breast lift surgery?
While rare, breast lift surgery does have potential risks. These include:
- Anesthesia risks
- Infection
- Poor scarring
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation
- Breast asymmetry
- Breast shape irregularity
- Possible revision surgery
-
How will future pregnancies affect my breast lift?
While not required, Dr. Mabourakh often recommends that women wait for their breast lift surgery until after they are done having children because of the “undoing” effect that pregnancy and breastfeeding can have on breast lift results.
That said, should an additional pregnancy arise, there will be no complications to your pregnancy, and you will most likely still be able to breastfeed. If future breastfeeding is a concern, please discuss this with Dr. Mabourakh during your consultation.
-
Can I combine my breast lift with other breast procedures?
Breast lift surgery can be combined with breast augmentation for greater breast enhancement. Implants can be placed simultaneously for women who experience “deflation” of their breasts or for women wishing to enhance their breast size. Often, women who have implants experience longer-lasting breast lift results. Additionally, if you’d like more modest volume, you can pair your breast lift with a “natural” augmentation via fat grafting.
-
Will I go down a cup size after a breast lift?
Not exactly. While it’s important to note that a breast lift alone does not increase volume, it doesn’t necessarily result in smaller breasts, either. The main priority is to remove excess skin, lift the breast tissue higher on the chest, and make any necessary adjustments to the nipples. So a breast lift likely won’t make your breasts smaller; if anything, they will be firmer and look more youthful.
If you are concerned about volume loss in addition to breast sagging, you may be a candidate for combining breast lift surgery with breast implants for a breast augmentation with lift.
-
What’s the difference between a breast lift and a breast reduction? Which is right for me?
Breast lifts and breast reductions have similar incision patterns and aesthetic benefits, but are for different candidates. If you have excessively large, heavy breasts that you would like to be smaller and more lifted, a breast reduction might be ideal. If sagging skin and a deflated appearance are your primary concerns—not breast weight or size—then a breast lift is likely ideal. Dr. Mabourakh can discuss these differences with you during your consultation.
