How Long Does Tummy Tuck Recovery Take?

If you have stubborn belly fat, loose abdominal skin, or diastasis recti, then you might be considering a tummy tuck for a midsection transformation. And abdominoplasty does deliver some impressive results. No other procedure treats the abdominal wall of separated muscles, a common condition after pregnancy or weight loss, nor does any other achieve a slimmed, hourglass effect.

For many patients, these results largely outweigh the prospect of tummy tuck recovery, but it’s still helpful to know what you’re getting into. While abdominoplasty is a major surgery that requires diligent aftercare and downtime, the recovery process is quite manageable.

In general, patients can expect tummy tuck recovery to take between two and four weeks, with about two weeks of realistic downtime. We’ll break down exactly what you can expect from those first four weeks below.

What Does Tummy Tuck Recovery Involve?

To understand a procedure’s recovery requirements, it’s helpful to understand the surgery itself. Abdominoplasty centers on two major techniques: removing excess skin and fat and surgically repairing separated abdominal muscles.

The reason tummy tuck recovery is more demanding than recovery from procedures is the extensive abdominal repair that’s involved. Your surgeon sutures the abdominal wall back together—a feat nearly impossible without surgery. Because of this, patients must be very gentle with their bodies as they heal, especially since it is difficult to stand fully upright while the abdominal wall heals.

It’s also challenging to have surgery on the midsection, as this area of the body is responsible for so much of your mobility. (Bending and twisting movements are restricted, requiring you to limit your movement.)

Let’s take a look at tummy tuck recovery in the first four weeks.

Week One Tummy Tuck Recovery

Immediately after your tummy tuck, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for a couple of days. The first day, you’ll be groggy from the anesthesia and probably sleep. You’ll return to your doctor a day or two later so they can check your incisions and ensure you’re doing well. They will likely give you a compression garment, which helps your skin retract and reduces swelling; wear it day and night as directed.

Expect some discomfort in the first week. Bruising and swelling peak at this time, and you’ll feel very sore and stiff. As mentioned, you won’t be able to stand fully upright—don’t push yourself. Remaining in a stooped position lets your abdominal muscles heal without putting pressure on the sutures.

  • Tip: Some patients opt to sleep in a recliner chair during early recovery to maintain that bent position. Otherwise, stacking pillows on your bed can do the trick.

It’s important to follow all recovery instructions and give yourself plenty of time to rest. The more you sleep, relax, and rest, the better your body can focus on healing and the faster your recovery will be.

As you feel stronger, you can begin incorporating light movement, such as brief walks around your house, gradually increasing the distance.

Week Two Tummy Tuck Recovery

Some patients start to feel stronger around week two, and certain individuals might be okay to return to work if they have a desk job. However, most surgeons recommend taking a full two weeks off. Tummy tuck recovery is a marathon, not a sprint, and rushing the process not only doesn’t work, but it can reverse any progress you’ve made. When in doubt, slow down.

You’ll still be wearing your compression garment during this time, only taking it off to shower. You should start to see some improvement in bruising and swelling, but bear in mind that swelling takes quite a while to fully resolve. Be patient; week two is often challenging because patients start to think they are recovered, but are still quite fragile. It’s a bit of a frustrating in-between state.

Week Three Tummy Tuck Recovery

You’re likely back to work and incorporating more normal activities in your routine, but bending and lifting are still prohibited, as is exercise. Light walking is still great for healing, as increased blood circulation helps deliver vital oxygen and nutrients to healing tissues.

  • Tip: Your incisions should be fully “sealed” at this point, meaning they are no longer separated, and scabs have formed and fallen off. When this happens, you can start your scar treatments! The sooner you treat your scars, the softer and lighter they will be. Your surgeon may recommend a specific product, but silicone sheets and scar creams are typically the standard.

Week Four Tummy Tuck Recovery

After your first month of recovery, you’re likely feeling much more like yourself and even starting to see some final results! Most patients have been cleared to resume light exercise, excluding workouts targeting the abdomen.

You still have a ways to go, but you’re out of the woods now. Continue caring for your scars (avoid sun damage and always use SPF), and after about week six, you will be cleared to resume more strenuous activities.

Your midsection will look taut, flat, and slimmed, for a sure boost to confidence, greater clothing choices, and a stronger abdominal wall.
