Should I Get a Breast Augmentation or a Breast Lift?

Posted June 02, 2017 in Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation patient of Dr. Mabourakh Many women know they want to improve the appearance of their breasts by correcting sagging, deflation, and/or small breast size. They often visit our office interested in either a breast lift or a breast augmentation and learn valuable information in the consultation that suggests the procedure opposite what they thought—or a combination of the two—will better meet their needs. The choice between a breast augmentation and a breast lift is always best determined with Dr. Mabourakh during a consultation, but here are a few ways to determine which procedure will likely benefit you the most.

Do you have sagging breasts or volume loss?

Pregnancy, aging, and/or weight fluctuations often leave the breasts deflated. The breasts may sag to the point where the nipples no longer appear where they naturally should: at the midline of the roundest part of each breast. A breast augmentation alone is often not sufficient to correct mild to moderate sagging, and it is definitely not the best option for those who have severe sagging. A breast lift is the ideal procedure to remove any excess skin and move the nipples to a more youthful position on the breasts. The length and shape of the incisions involved in a breast lift are designed according to the degree of sagging present.

Do you want to correct breast asymmetry?

Uneven, disproportionate breasts are very common. Either a breast lift or a breast augmentation can correct asymmetry; the choice usually depends on whether the patient desires to increase her breast size as well. If she desires to enhance the size of her breasts, a breast augmentation alone or in combination with a breast lift will likely be the best option.

Do you want to increase your breast size?

Breast augmentation is an ideal cosmetic procedure for increasing the size of the breasts. Saline or silicone implants are placed either above or below the pectoral muscles to enhance breast shape and size. A breast lift will lift the breasts to a more youthful position, improve their shape, and can even reduce the size of the areolas (if desired), but it will not restore volume loss.

Many other factors can determine whether a breast augmentation or a breast lift is the ideal procedure for you. If you are interested in learning more, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Mabourakh by calling (916) 984-8585 or by filling out our online contact form today.
