What is the Difference between a Breast Reduction and a Breast Lift?

Posted January 30, 2024 in Folsom Plastic Surgery Q&A

Hi, it is Dr. Mabourakh from Folsom Plastic Surgery, and today we have one of our patient questions that we’re going to answer.

What is today’s question?

What is the difference between a breast reduction and a breast lift?

That’s a great question.

Breast reduction

is done when you want the breasts much smaller. Now a reduction includes a breast lift, that means we elevate and reduce the size of the breasts. The reasons for breast reductions are multiple, most likely patients are having neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, or clothing just doesn’t fit right. Now, when we perform a breast reduction, there is a range of how much we can reduce the breast. That’s something we discuss during our consultation.

Breast lift

does involve lifting the breast into position, but we don’t usually reduce the size of the breast. In fact, with the breast lift, sometimes we even add a small implant to obtain a little bit more fullness up high which you can’t get unless there is a lot of breast tissue to lift. So, the scars are actually very similar between a breast lift and a breast reduction.

There are different kinds of breast lifts.

Let’s talk about a full breast lift, where you have an incision all around the nipple, coming down, across the bottom. This is exactly the same as a reduction but maybe with smaller incisions.

So, when we add it all up together, breast reduction lifts and reduces, whereas the breast lift elevates and sometimes even adds volume by adding an implant.

Well, I hope that was informative. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at Folsomplasticsurgery.com and please send your question for me to answer next time.

Thanks.
